Moving from ProBoards, How do you move things over?
#
Hello!
We are considering moving to jcink, our forum is currently on ProBoards. We don't want to move and have to completely re-do and re-write everything, so is there a way to transfer the work we had done on ProBoards, over to our forum here on jcink? Things like the skin/layout, the threads, and the toggle chat?
We want to make sure we can make as smooth of a transition as possible before doing the move, and we are fine with doing it slowly. We just want to make sure we do it correctly and don't lose any work or info.
Thank you in advance for any advice and feedback! <3

Hi! Thanks for considering us.

Unfortunately, almost everything you want to move cannot be transferred here either directly, or at all. The skin/layout elements and the chat aren't impossible to convert to our style with some work, but the biggest problem is the threads/posts. Proboards provides no way for users to get their data out of the system (unlike us http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif). We have never migrated a proboards site because of this. You would have to start all over. Sorry to disappoint you but I hope this makes you more informed should you choose to move.

John,
I guess my follow up questions then would be:

1. How do we advertise our forums on jcink? We don't want to move if we have no way to get the word out.

2. I heard from a friend that the roleplay community here is bigger than that of ProBoards, is that true?

3. When you buy premium to use the age restriction tool, how do you stop people who are under 18 from joining? Or is the age restriction tool one that you can set the age requirment to sign up for your forum? Do they have to "prove" they are 18 or older to join premium forums? If so, how do you require potential members to prove that?

Luckily our forum has a few staff members so we can move everything over together, but we want to make sure that the move is the best option for us and will grow our community before we do so.

Thank you so much! http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif

1. Advertising avenues are up to the board owner -- but there are many third party boards that can you advertise your board in.

2. We cannot comment accurately on aspects like this really as we cannot effectively compare both without data. We certainly offer many features that are appealing to those in the RP community, such as subaccounts, a shop system, and other appealing features that make running those types of communities easier.

3. The age restriction tool allows you to set up a message requesting the member to verify their age. To verify the age, the member must put in their birthday and agree to the terms. This is the only form of verification. If you wish to do extra verification, that would be up to you.

That sounds fair! I am just having trouble navigating the forum I made, and creating boards is extremely confusing. Is there a tutorial that explains everything anywhere that I can look through? Or someone who could help explain how to set up your forum base so our coder can do the rest?

Sorry for all the questions!

Just to help on the RP aspect of this~ There are plenty of tumblr directories you can submit your advertisement too! I'm not sure if I'm technically allowed to link any here, so I'll wait and see if John allows it (I don't know why I wouldn't be but just ... going to clarify lmfao)

In terms of advertising, i believe it's similar to proboards.
Most sites use First link // link backs & accepted! However, I find tumblr directories and forum directories (again I'll link if I'm allowed too) are the best ways to get your forum name out there!
Along with making site buzzes for your rp before your opening date http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Jess,
Thank you so much for the input! I have NO CLUE how to work Tumblr to save my life. XD But I will see if anyone on my forum does currently and have them do it. xP Thank you!

I guess another question I have for both of you would be this: I was speaking briefly to another forum on jcink who said without premium we would not be able to advertise or affiliate with them without fear of being shut down. Is this because of the 18+ thing? Are you only allowed to advertise on forums that are 18+?

Thank you <3

Because I know the answer to that question: It's for the safety of your board on Proboards, not theirs on JCINK.

You can advertise on any JCINK board where the admin has made a space for you and deemed it okay, but many of us who pay for premium and have boards with adult content warn the owners of Proboards boards not to advertise. This is because, as that other admin (and I) understand it, your board is essentially linking to mature content which could be grounds for removal under the Proboards ToS. I have never used Proboards and I don't know if they are that strict about it, that a guest-dropped advert could get your board taken down, but that is where I have seen that come up before.

Basically, they are trying to be nice and warn you that there might be trouble because they don't want your board to be flagged by Proboards who seem to be a lot quicker to just Section 25 a board than contact you so you can correct and accidental ToS breaches. However, if you don't believe that is a risk, then you can advertise away. You can also just make sure that every JCINK board you advertise on has a rating of 2/2/1 (within the free ToS) or less.

Chlocelot,

Thank you for the feedback! That makes more sense. So, if we move to jcink (which is the plan), and buy premium so we have an 18+ member base, we can advertise on any other jcink forums, correct? I'm sorry for all the questions, I just like to be as informed as possible before doing something huge like moving.

May I ask what the rating 2/2/1 means? I don't believe I have seen that before. I guess when we move we can avoid advertising/affiliating with Proboards all together to avoid any issues, but that means removing current affiliates.

This is a big reason we want to move to jcink. Even though it costs per month, it seems to be a more lenient forum host in terms of letting you run your forum the way you'd like to. Proboards, while it has some awesome perks, is SUPER strict about stuff and sometimes you can feel like you walk on eggshells as to not get shut down or in trouble.

My main concern is moving to jcink and doing ALL that work over again, only to have our community not grow at all. Currently, we advertise and affiliate like crazy, but it still seems that we aren't getting far. We hope moving to jcink with more freedom and flexibility will help.

Thank you all for coming over and chatting with me, answering my questions, and just being awesome. It feels nice to know there is such a welcoming community here. http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif

You may link some since the OP is asking for them.

They are referring to the RPG Rating system.

We can't speak for them but if their users aren breaking the mature content rules they have, then this is understandable. When users break this rule it puts their advertising revenue at risk. Advertisers don't want their ads on mature content. Likewise, people who try to "fly under the radar" on this service put us at risk and create a potential headache and we don't like that either.

You plan to buy premium so honestly you're not going to have any problems regarding mature content. http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Also -- it's not going to cause you any problems with us if you're affiliated with other boards that are breaking their host's terms of service. It's not our business or concern as long as you're not breaking ours; and I don't think anyone affiliating you should care but that's just my opinion.

John,
Yeah, I get you. Nothing wrong with Proboards, they do them, I just think for what I want out of my forum, you guys are the best option.

You're the best. Thank you for everything. I think that's all the info I needed. If I think of anything else, I'll make a new thread later. We will be moving soon, it's a big project but it's gonna be worth it! http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif I can't wait. Thanks again everyone <3
