I didn't even realize there was an issue as I have been using my mobile on site recently, but when I went on my laptop this morning I realized that you can send private messages through the main profile or the mini.

<!-- |author_name| --> is the wrong variable to use for the PM form -- that's an post / mp template variable (hence author).
Use <!-- |name| --> instead for Main Profile templates.
